FEES TO WATCH OUT FOR

Second part fees: 1. Brazil – CHF135 per class (US$150) 2. Japan – CHF267 per class (US$290) 3. Cuba – CHF82 flat rate (US$90)
Second fees are payable when the relevant territory is satisfied that the application meets the local requirements WIPO will notify the applicant (or their representative)
Make sure the extra fees are in the budget.

CONS

Not all territories are included (e.g. Argentina, Chile, Hong Kong, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, South Africa), so direct filing may still be required
No opportunity to file a broader local trade mark.
Additional costs if local issues arise – you may still need to appoint a local lawyer
Registration process typically takes longer than direct filing (18 months cap)
Goods and services are tied to the base mark – particular risk if base mark is a US mark due to non-use requirements.
If you decide to sell one of your trade marks filed through WIPO in some of the countries, you will have to convert it to a local mark first which is an expensive and complex procedure.
You may find out about issues (e.g. oppositions) too late, or may not be notified at all. (e.g. Brazil)
